At this point in time, I think it would be appropriate to define the word ‘loins’, since many people nowadays have weak vocabularies. The word ‘loins’ refers to the genital and pubic area, or the genitalia. So if the Quran says that sperm comes from the genitalia (and it does!), then how is this a scientific error?

A fluid gushing forth” means ejaculation of semen (maain) carrying the sperm (nutfa), one of the minute, usually actively motile gametes-a mature male reproductive cell in semen, which serves to fertilize the female ovum. Sperms are produced by testes. Each testes has 800 small tubules and each tube about 2 feet long, semeniferous tubules which produce sperms about 200-300 million every day. There are 2 valves around urethra. Both are tightly closed to hold and store semen before its expulsion. The inner valve stays tightly closed to prevent backward ejaculation into the urinary bladder and the outer valve intermittently contracts and relaxes 3-7 times along with surrounding muscles contraction to generate force for propelling the semen out (dafiqin). Sulb is the backbone (vertebral column) and taraib the ribs. There are 12 pairs of ribs. Of them, 7 pairs are called true ribs as each of them is attached between the vertebra (backbone) and the sternum (breast bone), and the remaining 5 are called false ribs as they are also attached to the vertebral column but not to sternum. Ejaculation is a highly complex process which requires smooth coordination of multiple sections of the nervous system. Mechanism of emission and propulsions is caused by 2 spinal cord centers. The spinal cord is 43-45 cm long and is continuation of brain tissue and occupies its place in the center of upper spinal bony vertebral column. It is the proper functioning, integrity and continuity of these 2 spinal cord centers located between vertebrae (sulb) and ribs (taraib) connecting spinal cord and sex organs along with the valves around urethra by the nerves which are responsible for ejaculation. Phases of Sexual Intercourse Masters and Johnson divide the human sexual response into four phases: the excitement phase, the plateau phase, the climax or orgasm, and the resolution phase.7 Sexual excitement begins with psychic stimuli such as anticipation, memory, visual sensation, or with local physical stimulation. The pressure of the “gushing fluid” is so great that it can be expelled 12- 24 cm away from the urethral meatus outside the vagina.The spinal cord ends at the level between first and second lumbar vertebrae. The spinal segments, L1, L2 and S1, S2 are enclosed within the first and second lumbar vertebrae, which are below the thoracic ones where the ribs meet the backbone. Thus we have seen that the nerve signals to expel the semen or the “gushing fluid” is issued from the lumbar and sacral segments of the spinal cord, which lie below the level of the 12th ribs on either side and above L3 vertebra or “between the backbone and the ribs,” as the Qur’an says. The mechanism works so well that during ejaculation the internal urethral sphincter contracts preventing the urine from entering the urethra and preventing back flow (reflux) of the semen into the bladder. Female orgasm also occurs through the same nervous pathway. Thereafter the resolution or pre-excitation status returns. ALLEGATION
Its a common allegation which is made against the Quran. The Quran implies that semen production takes place in the kidney or back area citing the verses:
[86:6-8] "Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from a drop emitted -Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:"
The allegation, in the words of Dr. William Campbell is as follows;
“Since the verse is speaking of the moment of adult reproduction it can't be talking about the time of embryonic development. Moreover, since 'sulb' is being used in conjunction with 'gushing fluid', which can only be physical; and 'tara'ib' which is another physical word for chest or thorax or ribs, it can't be euphemistic.Therefore, we are left with the very real problem that the semen is coming from the back or kidney area and not the testicles.”

EXPLANATION
The allegation is based on false premises that the Qur’an talks about semen coming out of the area between backbone and ribs.
DID THE QUR’AN USE THE WORD'' SPERM '' OR “SEMEN”? NOT AT ALL.
The Qur’an used the words, “Khuliqa minm Maain Daafiq”, that was translated by Sir Zafrullah Khan as, “created from a fluid poured forth” and by Maulvi Sher Ali as, “created from a gushing fluid”. These four words mean the ejaculate, which consists of 2-5% sperms and 95-98% other ingredients. Therefore only 2-5 % of the fluid is produced in testes. The majority of the other ingredients, including prostaglandins, Zinc, lipids, steroid hormones, enzymes, amino acids and minerals, are produced and stored in the seminal vesicles, and prostate glands, both of which are located away from the the backbone (not even close enough to the ribs) and in the pelvis area closer to the sexual organs.
DID THE QUR’AN USE THE WORD “KIDNEY”? NO.
Furthermore, we should try to discover what is that present in between the backbone and the ribs that causes the seminal fluid to be issued or expelled. In order to understand this verse, we must recollect the anatomy and the physiology of the spinal cord, vertebral column, and the autonomic nervous system. Briefly, without going into biological and physiological details, the reflex centres in the spinal cord begin to send nerve signals or emit rhythmic sympathetic impulses that leave the cord at lumbar segments L1, L2 and pass to the genitalia. Next, the last wave of reflex nervous mechanism takes place. Rhythmic parasympathetic impulses from the sacral segment S1, S2 leave the cord resulting in the expulsion or ejaculation or forcing out the “gushing fluid”.
The spinal cord ends at the level between first and second lumbar vertebrae. The spinal segments, L1, L2 and S1, S2 are enclosed within the first and second lumbar vertebrae, which are below the thoracic ones where the ribs meet the backbone. Thus we have seen that the nerve signals to expel the ejaculate or the “gushing fluid” is issued from the lumbar and sacral segments of the spinal cord, which lie below the level of the 12th ribs on either side and above L3 vertebra or “between the backbone and the ribs,” as the Qur’an says.
SUMMARY
Briefly, the Holy Qur’an is absolutely right in using the above words literally and scientifically too. All knowledge is in the Qur’an but some intellects are the one who fail to grasp it. The above mentioned physiological mechanism of ejaculation of the fluid and how the nerve impulses are discharged from the lumbar and sacral segments of the spinal cord that lie within the first two lumbar vertebrae, which are below the 12th ribs and above the remaining lumbar and sacral vertebrae, the backbone. Sulb Means “Loins”
Sulb can be translated as ‘loins’ or ‘backbone’ or ‘lower back’. The critic favours the translations which use the word ‘backbone’ as they use it to attack the Quran by claiming the Quran teaches that semen is produced between the backbone (sulb) and the ribs (tara’ib).
However, the critic is very selective in deciding which translation to use as he/she avoids the numerous translations which translate ‘sulb’ as ‘loins’. They avoid these translations as they scupper their critical claims straight away as loins. Here, the word loins refers to:
a. The region of the hips, groin, and lower abdomen.

The word “sulb” should not necessarily be translated as “backbone”. This word has many possible meanings and backbone is only one of them. It is also quite commonly used to mean the loins of a man. This is how it is used elsewhere in the Qur’ân. Allah says: “Prohibited to you (for marriage) are…wives of your sons proceeding from your loins (aslâb, the plural of sulb).” [Sûrah al-Nisâ’: 23] There can be no problem with sperm coming out from the area of a man's loins.
Pickathal, a translator of the Quran, similarly translates the word ‘sulb’ as ‘loins’.At this point in time, I think it would be appropriate to define the word ‘loins’, since many people nowadays have weak vocabularies. The word ‘loins’ refers to the genital and pubic area, or the genitalia. So if the Quran says that sperm comes from the genitalia (and it does!), then how is this a scientific error?

In other words, the word tara’ib could simply be referring to the woman’s uterus, since the rib cage surrounds it.
Another possible meaning for tara’ib could simply be ‘pelvic arch’, where the ovaries are located. Again, tara’ib literally means ‘an arch of bones’. The ribs form an arch of bones and this is why some of the early Muslims considered the tara’ib to be, but the pelvis certainly looks like an arch of bones as well. This is how Muhammad Asad translated the verse:

This word clearly has a very broad and diverse definition. It is so ambiguous a word that the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) could not give it a precise definition. Scholars of Qur'ânic commentary have consistently admitted to there being at least three different possible meanings for this word as it is used in the verse. This is an admission that they do not know for certain what the tarâ'ib are, except that they generally agree it refers to an area of the woman's body. It can apply to any region nearing the ribcage. Therefore, the area of the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, or the uterus can easily fit into the general area that is being indicated by these verses.

Is it Sperm or Human mentioned in Tarik Surah?*
The subject matter of this verse is in fact the process of ejaculation, this process is mentioned in the latter verse, i.e. verse number 7. Verse 7 mentions the process of “ejection” or in more specific terms the process of ejaculation. The word “يخرج” (pronounced yakh-ruju) means “to come out”, “to depart”, “to leave” and “to go out” among others.
And now about the Qur’an being right or wrong with regards to the subject matter, which is in simple words the process of ejaculation. Let’s see if the process is correct as stated in the Qur’an.
Expulsion is a spinal cord reflex that is mediated by somatic motor components of the perineal branch of the pudendal nerve that originate from nerve roots S2–S4 as well as by concurrent relaxation of external urethral sphincter and urogenital diaphragm.[2]
We can see from the statement above that the expulsion is a spinal cord reflex. Without the involvement of the spinal cord it would be less likely for the process to occur.
In men with spinal cord injury, the ability to ejaculate is less common than the ability to obtain an erection. The rate of ejaculation varies depending on the nature and location of the neurological injury. In complete upper motor neuron lesions, the ejaculation rate is estimated at 2 percent. In incomplete upper motor neuron lesions, the ejaculation rate is estimated to be somewhat higher at approximately 32%. Many men who are able to ejaculate experience retrograde ejaculation into the bladder, some may experience dribbling of semen.[3]
Apparently people who have spinal cord injuries have extreme difficulties in ejaculating and in case they do many experience a back flow of semen into the bladder or mere dribbling of semen. This does show that an injury to the spinal cord does have a profound effect to the ejaculation process.
The Qur’an did not get it wrong, in fact it was more accurate than anything of its time to begin with. The subject matter of discussion are very important as they give a context to the discussion at hand. Though Mesonephros originates in embryos chest region, this photo shows testes little below ribcage coz, as baby's abdomen grows long, a rope (gubernaculum) attached to testes doesn't grow so it pulls testes down & testes ends up in abdomen region. Proces of baby's growth continues while that rope stays the same length..... so testes keeps coming down & down untill it ends up in scrotum.

The semen contains many things. Between 95 to 98% of it consists of fructose, prostaglandin hormones, metal and salt ions, lipids, steroid hormones, enzymes, basic amines, and amino acids. All those are produced from the glands located in abdomen. Between 2 to 5% of it consists of the sperms produced in the testicles.....
During coitus that liquid springs from the abdomen (“between the ribcage and the spine”). That is a scientific fact!....
Semen is stored in vesicles that lie in the abdomen. From there it is ejaculated during coitus. Lay people still think that the ejaculate comes from the testicles.
The Quran does not say where semen is produced. Just where it comes from during coitus!
In fact, if the Quran had said that the semen is produced in the abdomen, (“between the ribcage and the spine”), and not the testicles, it would still be accurate. At least 95 to 98% accurate! Only 2-5% of the semen is contributed by the testicles. The rest is produced in the glands located in the pelvic cavity.
But the Quran does not say where the semen is produced, because the Quran is not 98% accurate. It is 100% ACCURATE!....What does the Quran really say?

The Exact Arabic words are just four: “Khuliqa minm Maain Daafiq”
Khuliqa = created ; Minm = from
Maain = liquid, fluid, juice, water ; Daafiq = anything that flows out, gushes out, pours out, wells out, sheds. (From the Hans Wehr Arabic to English Dictionary)
The Standard Arabic to Arabic dictionaries also mention: anything that surges or bounces. For instance a “daafiq” ball would be a “bouncing ball”
“Maain Daafiq” is a surging fluid, gushing water, the liquid that pours out, or any combination of the words for “maain” and “daafiq” mentioned above.
Famous translators have rendered these four words as:
“Created from a drop emitted” (Yusuf Ali). “Created from a gushing fluid” (Pickthal). “Water pouring forth” (Shakir). “Created from a fluid poured forth” (Zafraullah khan). “Spurt of water” (Hamidullah).
Arabic speakers can really appreciate the beauty of these four words!
The Quran does not use the word ‘sperm’, nor the word ‘semen’, nor does it say anything about the production of semen or sperm.
The emphasis is clearly on the word ‘daafiq’, the surging, the welling out, the pouring forth, the shedding, and the flowing out of the fluid.
Simply put, it is the ejaculate that fertilizes. And that is the simple truth. The simple scientific truth!
Can the Sperm alone fertilize the human ovum?
Sperm alone cannot even move very well. They need energy to swim to the egg and penetrate it. That is provided by fructose, a sugar produced by the seminal vesicles.
Prostaglandin hormones are needed to suppress an immune response by the female against the foreign semen.
Zinc is needed to stabilize the DNA of the sperms.
Metal and salt ions are needed to make the pH of the vaginal cavity favorable for the sperm to survive.
Lipids, steroid hormones, enzymes, basic amines, and amino acids are also needed to perform vital functions.
The ejaculated fluid has all that is needed, including the sperms (2-5% sperms, 95-98% other ingredients). The statement of the Quran is absolutely correct!
Where does the semen spring from during coitus?
During coitus semen is ejaculated from the two storage areas called the seminal vesicles, and NOT FROM THE TESTICLES.
Let man look at (and bear in mind) the substance he is created from! (He is) created from the surging fluid, which springs from between the spine and the ribs! 86:5-7
What is definitely excluded is the scrotal pouch, which is below the spine! Semen does not spring from there during coitus!
Also excluded is the thorax, since it is not between the ribcage and the spine, but is rather inside the ribcage.
The area not excluded is the abdomen and the pelvic cavity! The Quran is 100% correct. Semen is stored in the seminal vesicles to be ejaculated during coitus.
The exact words of the Quran

Sulb = backbone, loin, lower back; Taraib = ribs, breastbone, chest.
Bain = between, among, amidst
It is a phrase in Arabic that is similar to the English phrase, “somewhere between the front and the back”
It would mean that the semen springs from “somewhere between the front and the back” of the body. In other words, somewhere from inside the body!
If one was to insist upon the literal meaning, one would still find that the Quran is 100% correct literally, too. The seminal vesicles are anterior to the sacrum and coccyx (lower back, loin) and the ribs are anterior to the seminal vesicles.
If one was to draw a line from the tip of the coccyx, to the upper portion of the seminal vesicle _ either one of the two_ and extend the line forward it will catch the ribcage.
The seminal vesicles from which the semen spurts out during coitus, lies between the ribs and the coccyx!

Why does the Quran simply not say, Abdominal cavity?
Only a creator of the universe can reveal words that remain precise and accurate for thousands of years even in this changing world. Every generation feels as if the Quran was revealed specifically for them, and only yesterday.
That is the miracle of the Quran! Its words seem always to be in agreement with what science has observed and determined with certainty.

The Quran asked the believers to say the following before mounting a horse, a camel or any other animal.
“Supreme is He Who tamed this for us. We could not have done it (otherwise). And we are certainly going to return to our Lord!” 43:13-14
When we get aboard a plane we get a feeling that these words were revealed in the jet age! The above is just a translation. The original Arabic words are more poignant!
The statements of the Quran about the creation of the world, and about the relativity of time and space are amazingly the modern concepts.
People in the seventh century AD had their own ideas about how human beings are conceived. Ibn Ishaq and others who lived in those times found the words of the Quran in compliance with the scientific knowledge of their time.
Ibn Kathir, was a scholar of the 13th century AD, and scientific perceptions had changed by then. The wordings of the Quran still seemed in sync with the latest scientific knowledge of his time.
Dr. Bucaille, a non-Muslim scholar was amazed at what he found in the Quran.
In the modern times we find the words of the Marvelous Majestic Quran amazingly in agreement with the 21st century knowledge.
That is possible because the words of the Quran exist exactly as revealed. The language of the Quran is alive and well! It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. The original language of the bible was Aramaic which is dead as a doornail.
The Hindu and the Buddhist scriptures were originally written in languages whose names too have been forgotten!
Poetic license?
No literature in any language can equal the diction and eloquence of the Quran! It has rhythm, meter, and a sing-song quality. Yet it is not the work of a poet!
Poets achieve excellence by resorting to exaggeration. The Quran achieved the highest standard of eloquence and diction without any exaggeration. Everything is literally accurate!
That is what fills the believer with confidence. Just like the discourse of the Quran about the matters of this life, its description of the afterlife HAS TO BE just as accurate.
Consider chapter 86 of the Quran (surah Najam).
This chapter has 17 very short verses; each verse has between 2 to 6 words. They have a rhythm and meter, and they rhyme in a specific manner. Yet the subject discussed is so profound! The Quran does not stray one bit from its message.
This is the subject matter of the 86th chapter, a total of less than 65 words in Arabic.
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST MERCİFUL, THE MOST BENEFİCENT
By the sky, and the night star! How would you know what the night star is? A bright star! There is no soul without a guardian over it. Let man look at the substance he is created from! Created from the surging fluid which springs from between the spine and the ribs! Indeed, He is capable of bringing man back to life (after his death).
That day secrets would be laid bare. (That day) man shall have neither strength, nor any helpers. (I swear) by the sky that repeatedly sends rain down. And by the earth that splits (and lets plants emerge). Indeed, this Qur’an is the statement that sifts (right from wrong). It is not an idle tale! They are hatching a nefarious plot. But I, too, shall devise a scheme! So give the unbelievers a little respite. Deal with them gently for a while.
Remember, this is just a translation! The original words can put a believer in an ecstatic state.

A fluid gushing forth” means ejaculation of semen (maain) carrying the sperm (nutfa), one of the minute, usually actively motile gametes-a mature male reproductive cell in semen, which serves to fertilize the female ovum. Sperms are produced by testes. Each testes has 800 small tubules and each tube about 2 feet long, semeniferous tubules which produce sperms about 200-300 million every day. There are 2 valves around urethra. Both are tightly closed to hold and store semen before its expulsion. The inner valve stays tightly closed to prevent backward ejaculation into the urinary bladder and the outer valve intermittently contracts and relaxes 3-7 times along with surrounding muscles contraction to generate force for propelling the semen out (dafiqin). (Ref. Spinal Cord Medicine, Demos Medical Publishing Inc. New York USA, Chapter 26, Page 354).
Sulb is the backbone (vertebral column) and taraib the ribs. There are 12 pairs of ribs. Of them, 7 pairs are called true ribs as each of them is attached between the vertebra (backbone) and the sternum (breast bone), and the remaining 5 are called false ribs as they are also attached to the vertebral column but not to sternum. Ejaculation is a highly complex process which requires smooth coordination of multiple sections of the nervous system. Mechanism of emission and propulsions is caused by 2 spinal cord centers. The spinal cord is 43-45 cm long and is continuation of brain tissue and occupies its place in the center of upper spinal bony vertebral column. It is the proper functioning, integrity and continuity of these 2 spinal cord centers located between vertebrae (sulb) and ribs (taraib) connecting spinal cord and sex organs along with the valves around urethra by the nerves which are responsible for ejaculation. Phases of Sexual Intercourse Masters and Johnson divide the human sexual response into four phases: the excitement phase, the plateau phase, the climax or orgasm, and the resolution phase.7 Sexual excitement begins with psychic stimuli such as anticipation, memory, visual sensation, or with local physical stimulation. In the male, parasympathetic impulses pass from the sacral segment of spinal cord through the nervi erigentes to the penis, causing dilation of the arteries, higher blood flow, and elevated pressure in the erectile tissue of the penis resulting in engorgement and erection. In the female, effects of vasodilation on the clitoris and the vagina are mediated through the same sacral segment. This physiological status is maintained in the plateau phase. At the peak sexualexcitement (orgasm) two phenomena occur: emission and ejaculation.8 When sexual stimulation becomes extremely intense, the reflex centers in the spinal cord begin to send nerve signals or emit rhythmic symphathetic impulses that leave the cord at lumbarsegments L1, L2 and passto the genitalia to initiate emission. Emission begins with peristaltic contraction in the ducts of the testes, epididymis, vas deferens, and ejaculatory ducts causing propulsion of the sperm into the prostatic part of urethra. Simultaneously secretions from the seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands (Cowper’s gland) mix with the sperms to form the semen or seminal fluid. Next, the last wave of reflex nervous mechanism takes place. Rhythmic parasympathetic impulses from the sacral segment S1, S2 leave the cord via the pudendal nerve and cause the internal genital organs and the perineal skeletal muscles (ischiocavernosus and bulbocavernosus muscles) that encase the base of the erectile tissue to contract. The base of the penis is compressed, resulting in the expulsion or ejaculation or forcing out of the semen under tremendous pressure from the prostatic urethra to the deep recesses of the vagina. The pressure of the “gushing fluid” is so great that it can be expelled 12- 24 cm away from the urethral meatus outside the vagina.The spinal cord ends at the level between first and second lumbar vertebrae. The spinal segments, L1, L2 and S1, S2 are enclosed within the first and second lumbar vertebrae, which are below the thoracic ones where the ribs meet the backbone. Thus we have seen that the nerve signals to expel the semen or the “gushing fluid” is issued from the lumbar and sacral segments of the spinal cord, which lie below the level of the 12th ribs on either side and above L3 vertebra or “between the backbone and the ribs,” as the Qur’an says. Great pressure is mounted through reflex mechanism for the seminal fluid to travel a distance of 20 cm through the urethra, which is the common passage for urine and semen (“the base fluid”) in the males. The mechanism works so well that during ejaculation the internal urethral sphincter contracts preventing the urine from entering the urethra and preventing back flow (reflux) of the semen into the bladder. Female orgasm also occurs through the same nervous pathway. Thereafter the resolution or pre-excitation status returns. Incidentally, the testes and ovaries are intraabdominal organs in the fetus and lie on its posterior abdominal wall at the level of the upper lumbar vertebrae. As explained before, herein lie the spinal centers, which mediate emission and ejaculation. The testes descend to the scrotum about two months before delivery because the temperature outside the body is more conducive for the viability of the spermsThe author would like to emphasize in no uncertain terms that his attempt is an interpretation and categorically denies that this is the only possible or the only correct meaning of the the Glorious Qur’an, Chapter 86, Verses 5-7.
